How To Troubleshoot A Washing Machine That Is Leaking?

Don’t panic when your washer starts leaking water and damages your floor. Just call your friendly washing machine service technician who will solve the problem in a jiffy. If you are one of those who like to repair your machine without professional help, you can do so by identifying and repairing the problem part.

In this article are a few tips on how to troubleshoot a washing machine that is leaking:

Washing Machine Hoses Problems

If the machine is leaking, the first part you must check is the hose. Your washing machine’s most common water ways are the fill and drain hoses. These hoses are usually found at the rear side of the machine. Inspect these threaded hoses and make sure that they are tightened securely. Also, check if the drain hose is properly installed.

Internal hoses that connect the tub to the inlet valve can also become a source of leak. Leaks from these hoses can happen while filling the machine with water. You can access this hose by removing the cabinet or the top. If the hoses are in good condition, you should inspect the tub injection and siphon break. Some front loading washers also use the detergent dispensers as passageways for water. Make sure to inspect this area for leaks while filling your washing machine. When the problem happens during the washing portion then you must inspect the hose that connects the drain pump to the tub.

Washer Pump Repair Service

The water pump drains water from the machine. It can be direct drive, belt driven, or even a separate electric pump that will help drain water on your washer’s tub. The pump is connected to the inlet of the tub and uses hose outlet to drain the water from the tub. If the water is leaking from the machine during the drain or wash cycle, you must carefully inspect the drain pump to see the cause of the problem. A water leak from the drain pump indicates a problem with the pump. You can easily find the drain pump at the base frame since it is usually attached to the drive motor. Before you attempt to service the pump, make sure you disconnect the power supply to the machine.

Water Level Switch

At times, overfilling may be responsible for the leak. The water level switch helps in determining the correct water level in the tub. This switch is usually located behind the control panel of the machine and it has an air dome or a hose that connects it to the tub. If your washer uses electronic controls, this water level switch may be located under the tub in the sump area. When the water fills the tub, it will compress the air inside the tube and will push the diaphragm inside the water level switch. This will turn off the valve and help in maintaining the correct water level.

If the tube is leaking, there may not be enough pressure to turn off the valve and the machine may overfill and leak. A problem in the switch may also cause the machine to overfill and leak. Before you replace the switch, make sure you check the condition of the air dome hose. If the hose is blocked, worn out, or cracked, it may prevent the switch from turning off the valve.

Gasket for the Tub Cover

The tub cover and the outer tub need to be sealed with a rubber gasket to prevent water from leaking when you are using the machine. If you notice a water leak in this area while spinning the laundry, then your machine’s tub cover gasket could be the culprit. Look for soapy water stains or signs of water leaks to help identify the problem.

Boot Seal or Bellow

If the machine appears to be leaking near the door, it indicates that bellow is worn out or cut. To inspect the bellow, open the door carefully and look for signs of damage or dust. At times, detergent build up can also prevent a tight seal which can cause leaks. Avoid using sharp objects to inspect the bellow as it can cause tears and cuts.

Water Inlet Valve

This valve controls the flow of cold and hot water into the machine. The valve is usually situated at the rear where the hose connects to the machine. To access the water inlet valve, you have to remove the real panel or raise the top. If the water is leaking from the end side when the machine is filling, it indicates that inlet valve might be the problem.
