DIY electric range repair
In this guide you will discover useful tips for troubleshooting and figuring out how to fix the problem with your electric range that has a damaged glass cooktop or surface burners not heating properly.
Symptoms for electric range problems
- Damaged glass cooktop
- Electric range’s surface element not heating properly
Electric Range: Should I replace a damaged glass cooktop?
Accidentally dropping something on your glass cooktop or a flaw within the ceramic glass surface are the two common reasons why your glass cooktop may end up cracking or chipping. If your cooktop has cracked or chipped, the solution is to replace it.
Sometimes a glass cooktop will overheat as a result of failure of the temperature limiter for the radiant surface element. When that happens, it causes a thermal crack to develop in the glass cooktop above the radiant surface element. In that case, it means you will not only need to replace the cracked cooktop, but also in addition to that replace the thermal limiter so that you may prevent another crack from developing again in the cooktop glass. Sometimes the thermal limiter will be included in the radiant surface element, so you may have to replace the radiant surface element in situations where the thermal limiter will not be separately available from the surface element.
Try the following repairs to solve your electric range problem
Replace the ceramic glass cooktop of your electric range
Your electric range comes with a ceramic glass cooktop that provides a cooking surface that is flat and smooth. Under the cooktop, there are radiant elements which are attached there to provide the heat required for cooking. When the glass cooktop develops cracks or just becomes damaged, it is advisable to avoid using it until you can get another one and replace it.
The stove top glass replacement can be easily done after carefully removing the screws on the bracket supporting the surface elements as shown in the above image.
Replace the radiant surface element of the electric range
The radiant surface element is usually located underneath the ceramic glass cooktop where it is attached. If it fails or its thermal limiter becomes faulty, it will need to be replaced.
When the radiant surface element of an electric range is no longer getting hot, that is usually an indication of the element failure. Replacing it can be quickly done by transferring the wires from the old element, one wire at a time, to the new radiant surface element.
Replace the temperature limiter on a radiant surface element of an electric range
An electric range usually comes with a limit switch for its radiant surface element that works by switching off the element as a way of preventing overheating the ceramic glass cooktop that results to cracking it. Some radiant surface elements normally have the limiter included while others will not have it, so it has to be separately replaced as an individual component. Replacing the radiant surface element becomes necessary when it starts failing to heat or its limiter fails to achieve proper regulation of temperature.
