How To Fix When Dryer Won’t Work At All

It can be a frustrating experience for any homeowner if a dryer becomes completely dead. Such a dryer won’t start at all and it will show no signs of life. It is the kind of situation where the clothes dryer digital display will be dead. Even the drum light won’t be turning on if you try opening the door of the dryer using a dial timer. But when all that happens, you will need to start by checking if the circuit breaker in your house has tripped so that you can reset it. If it is a gas dryer that won’t work at all and appears to be completely dead, you would need to start by testing the gas outlet with a small appliance or a night light that you can plug in instead. If the electrical power outlet of your electric dryer is working, among the problems you might be having is a bad power cord, faulty timer or the electronic control board failure. All these can cause the dryer to stop working properly and will need to be checked and replaced.

Replacing the dryer timer

Your laundry dryer normally uses a timer located on the control panel which allows you to set the drying time if you turn the control knob of the timer. There is small motor located on the back side of the timer for advancing the timer during the cycle. Internally, the timer uses cams for opening and closing switches or contacts for operating different electro-mechanical components of the dryer including the heating element and the drive motor. You can only replace the timer once you determine it’s internal contacts are not properly working and the dryer won’t start, won’t heat or won’t continue to run, or there is a problem with the timer that won’t advance.

Repairing or replacing the dryer electronic control board

The work of an electronic control board is to govern how the dryer functions are timed and executed. Although the control board itself cannot be repaired, what can be repaired are the wiring connections on it. When you have the control board only getting voltage but not being able to transmit the same to the other dryer components, you will have to replace it for the dryer to work again. When the control board’s internal components fail in detecting sensor signals as accurately as they should, it causes a problem where the dryer may only start but soon stop right in the middle of a cycle. The process of determining if the problem lies with the electronic control board can be difficult unless there are burn marks that can be seen on it. again it’s also an expensive part which cannot be returned once you have installed it. So for that reason it makes sense to have a highly trained and certified appliance service technician to do some advanced diagnostics on the control board before considering its replacement.

Replacing the dryer power cord

One of the minor problems that can be easily overlooked is a damaged power cord that is supposed to provide electrical power to the dryer. The damage can occur in several ways so it is important to inspect the power cord and make sure it is not the cause of the dryer appearing not to work at all. There is a terminal block with contacts in the back side of the clothes dryer where you connect a power cord rated 240 volts. The power cord can become overheated or its wires get shorted causing the insulation to melt. Damaged wires will not allow the electrical circuit to the dryer to be completed, and the same thing happens when the outlet cord plug’s prongs disconnect from the wiring.
