Having a washer in your home that won’t start can be a painful experience. Most people would call their washing machine technician at the slightest hint of a problem in their household appliance. Getting a tech is one of the easiest ways of solving the problem. However, if you want to save a few bucks, you could try washer repair without using the services of washer repairman.
Here are some reasons why your washer won’t start:
Lid Switch
This switch in top loading machines will prevent the engine from starting when the machine lid is open. When the lid switch off the device fails, the washer won’t start. The machine lid switch is usually located below the main top. When you close the lid, it will actuate the device switch, which starts the washer.
If the engine does not start when you close the lid, verify that device switch is activated and that the actuators and the lever are not sticking or damaged. You may have to replace the lid switch when the motor doesn’t have power when the lid switch is activated.
To replace the switch, disconnect the power supply to the washer, and remove all the wires connected to the switch. Remove the switch and check for continuity using a multi-meter. Never try to bypass the lid switch of the washer, as it is necessary for the safety of the people who use the machine.
Door Switch
Door lock, door switch, and strike are safety features that are generally found in front loading machines. On most washer models, the door lock should activate, and door switch should be closed for the washing machine to start. The machines have their door switch on the door frame. You can start by inspecting the strike. The strike should engage the door assembly when the machine door is closed. If the strike is in perfect condition, check the status of the door switch using a multimeter. To test the switch, disconnect power supply to the machine.
Start Switch
The machine start switch is usually a part of the machine timer, which gets activated when the timer knob is pulled. Check wiring diagram of the device to locate the timer contacts. In some machines, this part is a simple contact type switch that can be found on the appliance control console. Once you find the start switch, you can use the multimeter to check its continuity. Before checking the continuity, make sure you disconnect the power supply to the machine.
Washer Knobs Repair
On washers that have a start switch, the knob is a part of the machine timer. The knob engages the shaft which operates the timer. Normal wear and tear can prevent the knob from engaging the start switch. To check the condition of the knob, disconnect the power to the machine and check the parts on the timer. Make sure you visually inspect the engine shaft and the parts to it to verify that the knob engaged the start switch when pushed in and pushed out.
Drive Motor
The drive motor is responsible for agitating and spinning when the machine cleans the clothes. Some washers use a reverse motor which allows the motor to spin in one direction when spinning and draining and spin in another direction for agitating. When the motor doesn’t start and makes a buzzing noise, it means there is some problem in the motor. To check the condition of the machine, you have to remove the drive set and the pump belt. This is a cumbersome and arduous part. Also, checking the condition of the drive motor and the parts connected to it is not easy.

Main Control Board
The control board is responsible for operating various components of the machine including the drain motor and the fill valve. If the board is not passing the right voltage to the machine drive motor, machine fill valve, door lock, and the drain motor the engine will not start. You need the right equipment to check the condition of the board. You must visually inspect the board for signs of damage. If the board is burnt or damaged, it is best to call a washer service technician to address the problem.
